Three years we told the world about Columbus, Ohio’s secret soul history, Numero returned to the scene of the crime for further exploration. Victim: Clem Price and George Beter’s no-rep custom studio Harmonic Sounds and its Prix imprint. Built around a few stray boxes of demos, including Penny & the Quarters’ uplifting “You And Me”—as featured in the 2010 film Blue Valentine—the balance of this 19-song collection is filled out with thrilling, previously released material by northern souldiers Joe King and the Royal Esquires, funk workouts from O.F.S. Unlimited, Mitch Mitchell & Gene King, the Soul Ensemble, and Chip Willis, dark, brooding deep soul from Marion Black, and heartstopping, salvation-seeking soul by Eddie Ray. Dante Carfagna’s notes provide crucial insight into Prix’s place on the local scene, and the package is illustrated with dozens of photographs, label scans, and a discographical survey of this brief, but brilliant early ’70s label.

MP3 FLAC Boomkat Product Review: With an opening preamble that firmly asserts that the one thing we don't need is another record label, the folk over at Numero nonetheless got busy sidestepping 'lawyers using Pitchfork as a tip sheet, 60 year old executives awkwardly trying to. This wonderful collection might be seen as a follow-up of sorts to Numero's 2004 Capsoul compilation, a compilation that billed itself as a portrait of 'Columbus Ohio's answer to Motown' it turns out Capsoul wasn't the only label in town ploughing this sort of soulful furrow. The long-forgotten Prix imprint, based around Columbus' little known Harmonic Sounds studio, is here.

Case in point: Eccentric Soul: The Capsoul Label, documenting the tiny Columbus, Ohio label's output during the 1970s. The selections included here are closer to the gritty sounds of Stax than to high-polished Motown soul, but the musicianship and performances would not sound out of place next to the same era's familiar classics from Memphis.
